Von der Leyen’s uncertain majority for EU top job

Ursula von der Leyen is seeking a majority in the EU Parliament to continue as the President of the European Commission. She requires the support of 361 members but, according to Politico, currently has only 350 confirmed votes from EPP, S&D, and Renew groups. The Greens, with SF member Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, are in dialogue with von der Leyen and stress on the EU’s commitment to the rule of law, support for Ukraine, and human rights. The Greens, crucial for a viable majority, have not yet committed their votes, expecting environmental legislation, a 2040 climate target, and upholding support for Ukraine in exchange for their support. Von der Leyen also has to consider her relationship with the center-right majority in the European Council and the right-wing ECR group. The Greens, along with Renew and the S&D, have threatened to withdraw their support if von der Leyen openly allies with the ECR’s Giorgia Meloni.
