Allergy association: Pollen plague hits Denmark
Astma-Allergi Danmark has officially marked the beginning of the grass pollen season due to high pollen levels. Approximately one million Danes suffer from pollen allergies, experiencing symptoms like watery eyes and itchy noses. Allergic reactions occur when pollen proteins interact with mucous membranes, prompting the immune system to respond defensively. Despite the challenges, patients can obtain treatment through their doctors to manage symptoms effectively. This pollen season is predicted to be both longer and more intense. Last June marked the highest grass pollen count on record at 429, surpassing the 2022 record of 411, attributed to climate change and prolific grass growth. Besides grass, Danes also suffer from allergies to other pollens like hazel, birch, and elm. Birch pollen season started in early April, affecting most Danish allergy sufferers.
