Denmark and Greenland extend chart deal to 2041
Denmark and Greenland have on Thursday signed an agreement to ensure the production and updating of nautical charts until 2041, as announced by the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities. Minister Lars Aagaard emphasized the importance of charts for navigation safety and vital infrastructure expansion. The current agreement was due to expire in 2027 and its extension symbolizes strengthened cooperation. The Greenlandic housing and infrastructure minister, Hans Peter Poulsen, welcomed the deal, which aims for equal conditions in charting and allows flexibility for Greenland’s dynamic development. The agreement pertains to charting for the shipping industry and recreational sailing. Since 2009, Denmark and Greenland have partnered in advancing the creation and digitalization of nautical charts for Greenland’s rocky waters. The Danish Geodata Agency has notably updated and digitized charts for southwestern Greenland.
