Carlsberg Sees Rise in Brand Beer Sales Q1

Carlsberg Group’s strategy to encourage consumers to switch from budget beers to more expensive branded beers seems to have succeeded in the first quarter. A trading update revealed that the beer conglomerate saw a 2% increase in beer volume sold, while revenue rose by 4.4% to 17.1 billion Danish krone, due to a surge in the premium category volumes by 8% internationally. The premium beers include Tuborg, Carlsberg, and Grimbergen, a brand also under Carlsberg’s rights. CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen expressed satisfaction with the growth in their premium portfolio and sales volume, particularly in Asia, which are significant growth drivers for the group. Additionally, Carlsberg has decided to reward shareholders with a new share buy-back program valued at 1 billion Danish krone.
