Medical equipment, refrigerators, and compressors began washing ashore along the North Jutland west coast at the end of December, after a Maersk cargo ship lost 46 containers in the Bay of Jammerbugt. In total, five containers have washed ashore, but Maersk has managed to find 21 containers on the seabed. (Archive photo). Photo: Emil Nicolai Helms/Ritzau Scanpix
Maersk halts search for lost containers
Maersk stopped its search for containers lost in Jammerbugten in December on March 14, notifying Ritzau via email. Instead, Maersk will plan to salvage the 21 containers discovered on the seabed. In the last six weeks of the search, only four new containers were detected. The salvage work will commence in June when conditions are more favorable. Maersk has successfully recovered parts of containers equivalent to about four containers, and five have washed ashore out of the 46 lost. Plastic Change, an environmental organization, is dissatisfied with the decision to discontinue the search, fearing the long-term environmental impact of the consumer products and chemicals lying on the seafloor.
