Billions in old bills still unexchanged
Danish National bank reports 15.2 billion DKK in old and soon-to-be phased-out banknotes, including the current 1000-krone bill, have been turned in. From July 2022, 790 million was received in 1000-krone notes, leaving 6.3 billion outstanding. The exchange rate of these notes has decreased and is expected to continue declining. Additionally, older series notes from 1944, 1952, 1972, and 1997 are still trickling in, either lost or saved as collectibles. Nationalbanken calls attention to the May 31, 2025 deadline when these series will no longer be legal tender. The phase-out makes way for a new series of banknotes expected between 2028 and 2029. Public input was sought for the new design, with themes of sea, flowers, and everyday life emerging. Notables such as Tove Ditlevsen, Arne Jacobsen, Tycho Brahe, and H.C. Andersen have been selected for depiction. A September 2024 report will detail the selection process and public involvement outcomes.
