Unprecedented GPS disturbances detected on Bornholm

Bornholm and southern Sweden encountered unprecedented GPS disturbances in Denmark this past May, reports daily Dagbladet Information. One incident lasted eleven hours at night, and another persisted for six hours. According to Dagbladet Information, such disruptions are known as ‘GPS jamming’ and were recorded by GNSS reference stations, including one in Tejn on Bornholm. Søren Reime Larsen from DTU Space noted the length of these disruptions as significant. This degree of GPS jamming is assessed to originate from vessels between Bornholm and Sweden. Experts suggest that these disturbances are part of Russian hybrid warfare in the Baltic Sea. André Ken Jakobsson from the University of Southern Denmark perceives this as pressure related to Danish aid to Ukraine. The Danish intelligence agencies acknowledge a rising threat from Russian hybrid warfare. The Defence Intelligence Service (FE) did not comment on the specific incidents but has acknowledged increased jamming activities since December 2023, deeming Russia a likely perpetrator.
