Denmark to bolster age checks in unmanned shops
Denmark is experiencing a growth in unmanned stores, prompting Interior and Health Minister Sophie Løhde to propose a law requiring age verification systems such as MitID. Her letter to trade associations, which has been shared with the Parliamentary Health Committee, outlines that clear legal backing is necessary for implementing such systems, effective from January 1. Løhde underscores the importance of adhering to alcohol and tobacco sales regulations, which are presently challenging for unmanned venues that lack conventional ID checks. She is also reviewing alcohol and tobacco sale laws relevant to these stores’ proliferation. Henrik Sedenmark from Danish Trade acknowledges Løhde’s initiative but calls for a technologically neutral solution across all sales points. Unmanned shops like Føtex Go allow customers to self-checkout and are overseen by a merchant responsible for stocking and upkeep.
