Cottage owners face tax hike

Over the next two decades, property tax for numerous cottage owners north of Copenhagen is expected to increase by 1700 percent due to new preliminary property assessments, as reported by Politiken. Members of the Solpletten Garden Association in Rudersdal Municipality will see an annual tax rise from 1200 DKK to 22000 DKK. Allan Juel Weber, chairman of the association, expressed disbelief, stating the hike is not a mistake. The sharp increase is due to a 2021 change in property assessment law that requires cottages in garden associations owned by their members to be valued like year-round residences. Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus has admitted that assessing cottages like permanent houses doesn’t make sense and plans to discuss revising the law with the parties involved in the new assessment system. Other garden associations, including Bachersminde in Dragør, have also been affected by the legal change.
