Denmark seeks equal nordic council roles for Greenland and Faroe Islands

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenland and the Faroe Islands should be treated as equal countries in future Nordic Council meetings. The remark was made at the Nordic Council’s summit in Reykjavik, following Greenland’s recent pause in its participation due to not being invited to a foreign policy meeting by Sweden’s presidency of the council. Additionally, the Faroe Islands were excluded from a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Reykjavik, causing their premier to abstain from a meeting the next day. Mette Frederiksen advocates full participation of these regions in discussions, especially on security and defense, given the global impact of the war in Ukraine. She has written to her counterparts in other Nordic countries suggesting changes to the Helsinki Agreement to allow full membership for Greenland and the Faroe Islands, respecting their constitutional status.
