PM Mette F. slams deepfake as destructive, backs ban

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has criticized a controversial deepfake video circulated by the Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti) on social media. Frederiksen remarked that political parties should refrain from such practices as they harm democratic discourse. The deepfake video, which was shared late April, depicted Frederiksen in a fake press conference suggesting the government would cancel major holidays like Easter and Christmas following the successful abolition of Great Prayer Day. She agreed with culture minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt’s move to seek a ban on these videos using copyright law, arguing that deepfakes threaten fundamental trust as they don’t depict the truth.
