10% of students need extra aid post-holiday

Starting from the next school year, a new initiative mandates that the top 10% of struggling pupils in Danish schools will receive additional support in Danish and math. Schools have the flexibility to plan how to conduct the extra tutoring according to their needs. Andreas Rasch-Christensen from Via University College emphasizes three research-backed approaches for aiding weak students: integrating support into regular teaching with two teachers, facilitating peer learning under professionals, and using effective evaluation methods to enhance self-awareness for improvement. The initiative follows a political majority decision linked to a major agreement concerning primary schools, focusing on essential competencies required for further education. Recent data from the Arbejderbevægelsens Erhvervsråd revealed that 11.5% of ninth-grade students failed their final exams in either Danish or math in 2023.
