Proposal to ban TikTok gathers 50,000 supporters
A citizen’s proposal to ban TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram for those under 18 reached 50,000 supports and heads to the Danish Parliament. Digitalization Minister Caroline Stage commends the initiative yet indicates that an EU-wide age restriction is unattainable. She agrees social media overuse is a problem for young people and intends to exploit the legislative limits to address it. The procedure will involve a supportive party’s political spokesperson pushing a resolution based on the citizen’s proposal. The proposal argues for banning platforms that use personalized algorithms causing addiction in minors. Stage acknowledges the prior oversight of the screen’s adverse effects and calls for implementing age restrictions.
