Government plans extra billion for elderly care

The Danish government proposes a reform with an additional billion Danish Crowns for elder care by 2027. Minister for senior citizens Mette Kierkgaard stated that 326 million Danish Crowns will be allocated in 2024, with incremental increases leading to the annual billion. Another 555.4 million Danish Crowns will support various related initiatives until 2027. These funds come from the fiscal space and previously reserved elder care allocations in the 2024 budget. The government’s 2030 economic plan includes 19 billion DKK to address demographic shifts with an aging population. Funds will be distributed through block grants to the municipalities, aiming to provide local autonomy and lessen bureaucracy. The reform includes new elder supervision, personalized care choices for the elderly, and the opportunity for communities to create local nursing homes.
