60% of coastal towns plan building in flood zones
In Denmark, nearly 60% of coastal towns are planning new construction in areas threatened by flooding. Aarhus School of Architecture’s study revealed that out of 54 coastal towns examined, 32 have upcoming construction in high-risk zones. Since 2010, these coastal towns have continued to build in regions susceptible to storm surges, such as harbour fronts. Experts advise caution, suggesting a shift away from such developments due to the increasing value in flood-prone areas. Danish Meteorological Institute data forecasts more frequent storm surges, potentially every two to three years, as a result of climate changes. Damages from storms and cloudbursts could cost Denmark 406 billion kroner over the next century. The Environment Minister underscores the urgency in reinforcing Denmark against climate threats and criticizes local planning for being too lenient in vulnerable areas. Coastal municipalities, like Assens and Nakskov, justify the construction near harbours as a response to public demand.
