Copenhagen’s Social Liberals Oust Mia Nyegaard

Culture and Leisure Mayor Mia Nyegaard of The Danish Social Liberal Party (Radikale) has been removed as the party’s lead candidate in Copenhagen for next year’s municipal elections. An extraordinary general meeting resulted in a vote where 88 members favored the removal while 43 opposed and 6 abstained. To Ekstra Bladet Nyegaard expressed her disappointment and is contemplating her future, possibly implying an immediate resignation as mayor. Although no formal challenges to her lead candidacy were announced, speculation suggests Christopher Røhl may be a contender. A decision on a new lead candidate is expected in January. The crisis surfaced after four fellow politicians from her party declared their loss of confidence in Nyegaard’s leadership, citing her direct management style and inadequate leadership abilities. Previously criticized for creating a harsh work environment, Nyegaard has since apologized. She remains eligible to run for the municipal election on November 18, 2025.
