Mayors seek more EU climate funds for cities

Twenty-one European city mayors, including Copenhagen’s Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, have co-signed an open letter demanding that the European Parliament prioritize allocating more EU funds for direct climate action in major cities. The mayors argue that cities are both a significant part of the climate change problem and a potential part of the solution, but investment is required. The mayors highlight that the world’s cities contribute to roughly 70 percent of global CO2 emissions, as stated by the C40 international city network. Copenhagen is on track to reduce emissions by 80 percent within the city limits by 2025, outpacing national reduction goals. The mayors stress the need for increased EU funds to further accelerate the green transition across Europe, which could, for example, speed up the phase-out of fossil fuels or promote sustainable mobility.
