Kelly Ortberg to lead Boeing amid challenges
Boeing has appointed Kelly Ortberg, with over 35 years of experience, as its new CEO, replacing Dave Calhoun after a turbulent period, including a flight where a window panel was lost. Investigations revealed significant quality control issues at Boeing, such as missing bolts and incorrectly placed drill holes. Boeing has now been ordered to present a plan to prevent future incidents. Ortberg also inherits the challenge of delayed aircraft deliveries. In revealing its second-quarter financial report, Boeing disclosed a loss of $1.44 billion, nearly ten times the loss of the same quarter last year, attributed to fewer aircraft deliveries. Sales have likewise declined by 11% in the first half of the year compared to last year, paralleled by a 25% drop in Boeing’s market value since the start of the year.
