Over 50 horses escape controversial stud farm

Between 50 and 75 horses have escaped from Viegård Stud Farm near Skals, north of Viborg, which previously faced scrutiny after the discovery of 50 buried dead horses in August and accusations of horse emaciation, which the owner denied. Both protesters and farm employees are working to corral the horses back. The stud farm underwent several unannounced inspections leading to four charges of violating animal welfare laws covering 35 issues in the first seven months of 2023. These visits resulted in numerous orders to improve animal welfare. Declared bankrupt in October, along with its owner John Byrialsen, the farm is now under investigation after a new incident was reported to the police. Earlier in the day, the police were obstructed by six people blocking the exit, hindering a veterinarian’s departure.
