Ex-Trump advisor urges Danish dialogue on Greenland

John Bolton, former National Security Advisor under Donald Trump, suggests that a solution to Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing Greenland could involve joint ownership between Denmark and the USA, along with Greenlandic independence. Bolton advises Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to acknowledge the security implications for the entire NATO alliance, emphasizing the critical nature of the Arctic Ocean ingress for keeping Russian and Chinese influence at bay. The goal for both countries, he articulates, should not be to ‘own’ Greenland but to ensure security, quoting former Secretary of State Jim Baker. The Danish government has reached out to Trump regarding threats posed this week, with Trump threatening military action and economic sanctions to gain control of Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen downplays the situation, suggesting that Trump should be taken seriously but not literally. Criticism has been directed at the Danish government’s diplomatic response to Trump’s pronouncements.
