Mattel introduces first Barbie with visual impairment
Mattel announced the launch of a new Barbie doll representing the visually impaired, complete with a red and white cane and sunglasses. Krista Berger, Mattel’s Global Head of Dolls, emphasized the iconic doll’s role in self-expression and creating a sense of belonging. The Danish Blind Society welcomed this step towards toy diversity. The organization’s vice-chairperson, Diana Stentoft, expressed positivity about toys reflecting the reality of children with visual impairments. Developed in collaboration with the American Foundation for the Blind, the Barbie also features a textured skirt and packaging with Braille. Stentoft hopes that this inclusive toy will be well-received in homes and schools, enriching children’s play and understanding of disabilities. The new Barbie is available online and will be in stores later in the summer.
