Liberal Alliance sets value-based citizenship criteria

Liberal Alliance leader Alex Vanopslagh asserts that Danish citizenship should be granted only to those who share fundamental democratic values and freedoms. The proposal, he tells Berlingske, could reduce legal certainty and predictability, but Vanopslagh believes protection of a free society justifies this. The party envisions an expert group to establish specific criteria and allowances for minor missteps, such as a single misguided social media post, which should not permanently bar citizenship. The initiative aims to prioritize values, excluding clearly anti-democratic individuals. The proposed approach draws from educational standards that promote democratic participation. Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad is assessing the proposal against constitutional standards, which mandate objective assessments by the government.
