Taxi law lifted on small Danish islands

Starting Monday, anyone can transport fare-paying passengers on the four small islands Bågø, Endelave, Hjarnø, and Orø without adhering to the taxi law requirements. The islands are the first to be exempted, with more applications pending. This opportunity arose after a change at the start of the year enabling municipalities of smaller islands than Bornholm to seek exemption from taxi law. The Danish Passenger Transport Association, representing bus and taxi operators, is not enthusiastic about this development. Their concerns include not knowing if drivers are criminally convicted or their health status, fearing it could set a dangerous precedent. The Ministry of Transport expects Fur and Omø to be exempt from taxi law after the summer as further applications are being considered.
