Relief in Randers as feared pollution averted

Randers Municipality breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday evening as the expected heavy rain proved less severe, thus posing no pollution threat from the Nordic Waste facility in Ølst. Despite forecasts predicting up to 80mm of rain, the downpour was effectively managed using rainwater basins and pumps without utilizing emergency trucks. Jesper Kaas Schmidt, the municipal director, expressed relief and hoped for drier weather to ease ongoing work at the site. Concerns had arisen about potential contamination of nearby Alling Å from rain mixing with polluted soil, which could have raised the water’s pH level and harmed aquatic environments. However, only 36mm of rain was recorded south of Randers. Restoration efforts at the Nordic Waste area and the reconstruction of the damaged Århusvej will continue, with the project currently about two weeks behind schedule due to wet conditions earlier in the summer.
