Government eyes better conditions for families

Lars Løkke Rasmussen from the Moderates predicts the government’s strong desire to improve conditions for families with young children. The Moderates propose better conditions for parents of young children, with hopes of a comprehensive family policy reform emerging. Rasmussen suggests this could be similar to the tripartite agreement on green policy made earlier in the year. Denmark has seen a decline in births from almost 70,000 babies 20 years ago to 57,500 last year, and an all-time high average age of 30 for first-time mothers. Rasmussen describes the low birth rate as Europe’s and Danish society’s biggest challenge, potentially leading to a shortage of one million Danes in a generation. The Moderates have previously proposed financial relief through loans for young families and a treatment guarantee for fertility treatment. Danish politicians acknowledge the growing concern over the declining birth rate posing future societal imbalances and propose to start addressing family policies once again.
