Court overturns Weinstein’s rape conviction
An appellate court in New York City on Thursday overturned a 23-year sexual assault sentence against former film producer Harvey Weinstein, as reported by The New York Times. The conviction was nullified because witnesses were called during the trial to talk about assaults that Weinstein was not charged with in this case. Additionally, the trial judge allowed allegations that were not part of the charges to be questioned, resulting in what the appeals court deemed an unfair trial. Harvey Weinstein was convicted in 2020, but remains imprisoned on a separate 16-year sentence for a rape case in California. The decision’s immediate impact is unclear until District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg decides whether to retry Weinstein. However, his carrying out of the California sentence means he is not a free man.
