Defense chief on re-armament: Mistakes should Be allowed

Danish defense chief Michael Hyldgaard acknowledges the government’s directive to rapidly strengthen the nation’s defense forces, stating, “Buy, buy, buy” as instructed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The urgency may lead to mistakes, which Hyldgaard admits in an interview. He emphasizes the importance of addressing and correcting errors if they occur. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen also expects mistakes during the buildup but prioritizes necessary enhancements. In February, Hyldgaard received expanded purchasing authority, though major acquisitions related to NATO requirements still require a coalition’s approval. Recent acquisitions include systems from German, French, and Norwegian companies to strengthen Denmark’s air defenses. This rapid procurement results in a more “patchwork” approach to acquisitions, including quick additions to the heavy brigade like IKKs, Piranhas, and Patrias.
