New bill to retain foreign students in Denmark

The Danish government is set to introduce a bill to help foreign students avoid losing their residency, particularly targeting fields with labor shortages. This includes areas like healthcare and IT. The proposed legislation, highlighted by the Immigration and Integration Ministry, will facilitate the stay of non-EU nationals like a Thai student pursuing social and health assistance. The scheme considers ‘positive lists’ of in-demand jobs. Education Minister Egelund deems it counterproductive to deport nursing students amidst escalating hospital queues. The policy is slated to begin on July 1st, with retroactive provisions for those who lost permits since July 2020. Additionally, a recent agreement aims to ease employment for 1,000 non-EU care helpers.
