Summer COVID-19 peak might show in coming weeks

COVID-19 infection rates in Denmark show no change during week 29, with wastewater surveillance indicating sustained medium levels of the virus, as reported by Statens Serum Institut (SSI). Since peaking at medium levels in week 28 for the first time since January, the level of infections has remained consistent. Executive consultant Bolette Søborg from SSI mentions that this stabilization could be a sign that infection rates may soon decline. The next few weeks are critical for understanding the trend of the virus. Denmark’s national growth rate stands at ‘no growth,’ based on the average presence of the virus in wastewater over the last three weeks. Wastewater sampling is an essential tool for tracking COVID-19 as the virus is shed in feces. Symptoms of the virus include fever and dry cough, with older age and certain health conditions increasing the risk of severe illness.
