Frederiksen rules out self as EU Commissioner

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark discussed the country’s next EU commissioner with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during an EU summit in Brussels. While nations like France and Ireland have proposed their candidates, Frederiksen has not named Denmark’s, choosing instead to wait for von der Leyen’s potential continuation as Commission President to be settled. At the summit, Frederiksen emphasized her aim for Denmark to have a strong future commissioner but declined to suggest any names publicly, including her own. Contrary to speculation, she stated unequivocally that she is not considering the role for herself, reiterating her dedication to her current post. The EU Parliament is scheduled to vote on von der Leyen’s continuation on July 18, after which the Commission’s composition will commence, concluding with parliamentary hearings in the fall.
