Danish EU candidate may still serve despite withdrawal

Alexandra Sasha, despite her withdrawal from politics, could still potentially secure a seat in the EU Parliament for Denmark’s Venstre party. Election researcher Kasper Møller Hansen explains that Sasha’s name remains on the ballot as the withdrawal deadline has passed. Regardless of her public resignation following media stories about alleged Russian influence, she could theoretically get enough votes to attain a mandate. If elected, Sasha could decline the position, allowing the next candidate in line to take her place, as occurred with Karsten Hønge of SF in the 2019 election. It is also possible for Sasha to re-enter politics or even join the EU Parliament as an independent or under a different banner since she’s listed in her own right, not on behalf of a party. Irina Bjørnø of Alternativet faces a similar situation due to alleged Russian connections.
