Government to expand military on Bornholm

The Danish government plans to increase the military presence on the island of Bornholm with a new infantry battalion, enhancing defense capabilities in the Baltic Sea. The battalion will be named Bornholm’s Regiment. This move entails relocating troops from Haderslev and is part of a restructuring process. Additionally, the Danish Defense is set to add 5,000 staff nationwide by 2033, due to earlier agreements and funds from the Acceleration Fund, raising the total workforce from approximately 23,000 to 28,000. Conscripts will also increase to 6,500. The rapid build-up of the army’s combat power is a priority, according to defense chief Michael Hyldgaard. While attracting and retaining personnel remains a challenge, with complaints about low wages, the government’s announcement doesn’t include a wage increase. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has stated that salary issues will be addressed following an analysis, with discussions expected in the fall.
