Queen Mary refashions Danish crown jewels
Queen Mary has transformed part of the Danish crown jewels, particularly the rose diamond set, into a new diadem, in a move announced by the Royal House on Instagram. This was made possible by creating an additional mounting frame, revitalizing the tradition of adapting the jewels to contemporary needs. The crown jewels comprise four sets stored at Rosenborg Castle, with the rose diamond set including a heavy pendant and a chain meant for the queen’s corseted waist, last worn by Queen Louise. Queen Margrethe seldom wore it, occasionally as a brooch. The new diadem, designed as a headband by goldsmith Matias Hasbo Dinesen, has the diamonds’ historical closed settings from the 1840s maintained, resulting in less brilliance but preserving their character. The collection is overseen by the Royal Collection Trust, custodians of over 25,000 historical items.
