Today’s news / Taxi law exemption for four more islands
Since the turn of the year, it has been possible for small islands to apply for an exemption from the taxi law. The requirement for the islands is that there is no existing taxi service, and that they are not connected to the mainland by a bridge or tunnel. (Archive photo). Taxi law exemption for four more islands

From October 1st, the taxi law will be lifted on Fur, Nekselø, Omø, and Sejerø, allowing anyone to transport paying passengers without adhering to the taxi law’s requirements, announced by the Danish Ministry of Transport. This measure follows the previous exemption of four islands – Hjarnø, Bågø, Endelave, and Orø, which took effect from July 1st, aimed to improve mobility on small islands. Since the beginning of the year, islands could apply for exemption, provided they lacked taxi services and were not connected by a bridge or tunnel; so far, eight islands have been exempted. Kirsten Sydendal, the chairperson of the Association of Danish Small Islands, expresses concerns especially about insurance coverage if exemptions continue, cautioning that accidents could leave drivers exposed to large claims and injured passengers without compensation. However, Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen previously assured the legality of the common practice of mutual assistance within these communities.
