Danish People’s Party joins new EU Group

The Danish People’s Party has switched from the ID group to the new ‘Patriots for Europe’ group in the EU Parliament, co-founded by Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán. The group, also initiated by parties like Austria’s Freedom Party and the Czech ANO, focuses on national sovereignty and combating illegal immigration. Despite Orbán’s Russia-friendly policies criticized after his visit to Putin, MEP Anders Vistisen insists that the group switch doesn’t endorse Orbán’s politics, emphasizing national control over foreign policy. Talks indicate that remaining ID members might join the new group that is aligned with the right wing in the parliament. To form officially, a political group must include parties from a fourth of the EU’s member states.
