Denmark may hit 1 million electric cars by 2028

Denmark is on track to surpass one million electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads by early 2028, three years ahead of government estimates. Mobility Denmark, a trade association, has outpaced the government’s forecast of reaching this milestone by 2030, projecting 1.6 million EVs by then. The surge in EV sales spreads beyond Copenhagen and is driven by tax discounts and price drops for new and used electric cars. The increasing variety of models and declining options for petrol and diesel cars also fuel the growth. Nonetheless, Mobility Denmark’s forecast assumes no increase in taxes in the future, with industry experts expecting a political shift from incentives to penalties eventually. Currently, electric vehicles account for 11% of all vehicles in Denmark, with 350,000 EVs on the roads. The Tesla Model Y remains the country’s best-selling car for the second consecutive year.
