Health minister ready to change late-term abortion rules
Danish Health Minister Sophie Løhde is prepared to abolish the regional abortion councils as reported by DR. In Denmark, abortions are allowed within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. For abortions after this period, one must seek approval from a regional council. Recent statistics have revealed significant regional disparities in abortion access. Over the last six years, 4% of women in the Capital Region and 13% in the North Denmark Region were denied abortions. Løhde proposes to replace the regional councils with a single national council to ensure uniform practice across the country. These councils, comprised of specialized doctors and legal or social advisors, have existed as long as the abortion law itself. The changes are currently being discussed among the political parties.
