Denmark to enforce ban on 27 Russian ships
Denmark is poised to enforce a ban on 27 Russian ships from entering Danish waters or anchorage sites, as indicated by internal guidance from Danpilot. This ban includes providing access to ports, anchorages, and services like bunkering and ship supplies. The prohibition is a result of the EU’s 14th sanctions package adopted in late June, targeting vessels suspected of being part of Russia’s growing ‘shadow fleet’ used to transport oil and circumvent sanctions. These ships, often old and with unclear insurance and ownership, can’t be easily traced back to Russia. Despite the sanctions being in place since June, reports suggest that the shadow fleet continued to access Danish anchorages. Russia has threatened retaliation for any restrictions in the Baltic Sea, complicating enforcement for Denmark, which is especially exposed to possible disasters like oil spills from the shadow fleet, according to European Council on Foreign Relations member Marie Dumoulin.
