20 hospital patients were infected with mold

At Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, 20 patients have become infected with mold since 2018, with conditions ranging from non-symptomatic to severe complications. Documents reveal that six patients died with mold present. Rigshospitalet admitted that handling very sick children in areas with mold problems was fundamentally unacceptable yet deemed close proximity to specialized pediatric care necessary. Notably, Aspergillus flavus, the identified mold, was also found within hospital ducts, indicating in-hospital transmission. This mold species poses a particular threat to critically sick or immunocompromised individuals, potentially infecting lungs or spreading to other organs. Over the last five years, at least 110 mold cases at Rigshospitalet have been reported, often in areas where high-risk patients should be protected from mold exposure.
