Danish PM talks Greenland with Trump

Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen and US president-elect Donald Trump had a 45-minute call discussing Arctic security, where Frederiksen stressed Denmark’s commitment to increase responsibility in the region. They also touched on Greenland’s ownership, with Frederiksen underlining Greenlanders’ rights and that it’s not for sale, referencing local government leader Múte B. Egede’s statements. Frederiksen made clear that Greenland’s independence is for Greenland to decide. The conversation was described as ‘straightforward,’ aiming to reinforce the Western alliance and cooperation. This call was a response to Trump’s expressed desire to acquire Greenland and his refusal to dismiss the use of military or economic means to fulfill this goal. Further discussions covered Danish-American trade and various international issues. Frederiksen did not expect Trump to respond before his inauguration, but the call happened sooner than anticipated, with both leaders agreeing to continue the dialogue.
