First 71 homes of controversial Amager construction
A topping-out ceremony on Monday marked the completion of the first phase of the contested construction project, Amager Fælledby. Despite attempts by environmentalists to halt the project due to concerns for the area’s nature, particularly the habitat of the great crested newt, construction has continued after objections were overruled. The event celebrates the completion of the shell for the first 71 apartments, which are expected to be ready for occupancy by April next year. Currently, half of these apartments have already been leased. The project, owned by PensionDanmark and By & Havn, will comprise a total of 2000 residential units, a school, and daycare centers, to be fully completed in eight years. Eco-friendly measures like using wood as a primary material and installing solar panels are being implemented to reduce the project’s carbon footprint.
