Denmark launches oversight of Mormons
The Danish Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs has initiated a supervision case against the Mormons following their leadership’s failure to report a man who raped his wife over several years, despite being aware of the crime, Kristeligt Dagblad report. The case gained attention after being featured in a TV 2 documentary. According to Minister Morten Dahlin The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had sanctioned the man with a year of silence in church meetings instead of informing the police. The man was later arrested and sentenced in 2022, but the church’s failure to report did not lead to legal consequences. Experts suggest the case could warrant the withdrawal of state recognition for the Mormon church. The Mormons have asserted their compliance with legal proceedings.
