Mold infection risk greater at Rigshospitalet

More patients than initially thought might have been infected with mold at Rigshospitalet, according to a report to the Patient Compensation Association. Rigshospitalet considers it likely that additional patients contracted mold infections during hospitalization. Previously reported were 20 patients and an employee infected with Aspergillus flavus from 2018 to 2023, but there are at least 31 other types of mold present. These other molds may also have caused infections. Rigshospitalet will now contact affected patients and relatives, a reversal from their prior stance of denying hospital-sourced infections due to lack of evidence. Berlingske’s investigation uncovered at least 110 cases of mold at the hospital in the past five years, with two-thirds found in areas where vulnerable patients should not be exposed to mold.
