Denmark supports justice for war crimes
Denmark signed a new convention on Thursday for international cooperation on the prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, the Ministry of Justice announced. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard highlighted that the convention aims to ensure that such offenses are unacceptable and prosecuted. The convention, relevant amidst accusations of heinous crimes in Ukraine due to the Russian invasion, seeks to end impunity. It standardizes processes concerning legal aid and the extradition of accused persons. While exact practical implications were not detailed, the convention may serve to prosecute war crimes in Ukraine. Named the Ljubljana-Hague Convention after negotiations in Slovenia’s capital in May 2023, it was initiated by the Netherlands and drafted outside the UN to allow more autonomy and flexibility for the expert group.
