Study of airport pollution impact initiated

High levels of ultrafine particles have been detected near residential areas close to Copenhagen Airport, prompting Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke to initiate a study on their potential health effects. The study will be conducted by the Danish Cancer Society with a budget of two million kroner, sourced from the national Air Partnership fund. It aims to address concerns raised by residents living in proximity to the airport and is expected to be completed within two years. Recent measurements by Aarhus University revealed elevated levels of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of the airport. These particles are emitted directly from combustion sources, including aircraft. However, there is insufficient knowledge about the health risks associated with high exposure to these particles. The Mayor of Tårnby Municipality, where the airport is located, supports the investigation and has been pushing for national action to understand the health implications for local residents.
