Denmark to fine incorrect tyres in snow

The Danish government aims to stop vehicles from skidding on roads during snowy weather by toughening the traffic law. Proposed changes, now in a hearing phase, suggest imposing a fine of 1,000 kroner per unsuitable tyre. Currently, no specific rule mandates winter tyres, but the update requires tyres matching the weather conditions, similar to regulations in Germany and Sweden. The Social Democrat transport spokesperson, Thomas Jensen, indicated that there’s no intention to make winter tyres a requirement during winter months due to fewer winter days in the past years. However, appropriate tyres will be necessary in snowy or icy conditions, and increased tread depth requirements for truck tyres are also part of the planned legislation. The proposal is set to be introduced in the new year and could become effective from July 1, 2025.
