Denmark’s surge in e-bike imports

Electric bikes are increasingly populating Danish roads and bike lanes with 114,200 e-bikes imported last year, a near sevenfold increase in ten years despite a slight decrease compared to the previous record year. Statistics Denmark indicates e-bike imports have soared in recent years, with last year’s imports valued at nearly 800 million Danish kroner. E-bikes are primarily imported from Bulgaria, Germany, and Taiwan, although Denmark produced 6,500 e-bikes last year versus 2,400 non-electric bikes. With more e-bikes in use, accidents have risen, resulting in 166 injuries, including 11 fatalities last year, up from 18 injured a decade ago. The share of e-bike casualties in overall bike accidents has grown from 2% to 20% over the period. Meanwhile, imports of regular bikes have declined from 482,300 in 2013 to 270,600 last year.
