New strategy to counter threats to Danish ships

The Danish government is launching a new maritime security strategy to address increasing threats at sea and to promote freedom of navigation. The strategy, which will be in effect from 2025 to 2028, comes in response to challenges to international legal order and geopolitical changes. It aims to defend Danish values and interests through a rule-based international order. While previously the focus was on piracy, new measures will also address ‘attacks by state-sponsored private actors,’ such as Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. The strategy proposes greater avenues for private companies to implement security measures like armed guards. However, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen clarifies this does not mean additional funding but an integrated approach across ministries to maintain focus on maritime security.
