Danish election faced minor insignificant attack

During the EU election day, Danish election campaigning experienced a minor DDoS attack from pro-Russian cyber activists, confirmed PET along with other authorities. However, there was no evidence of prepared, systematic, and coordinated influence from foreign states, as such activity has not been historically seen in Danish elections. The attack targeted the valg.im.dk website under the Ministry of the Interior and Health but did not affect the conduct of the election. Despite the lack of systematic attempts at influence during the EP elections, PET does not doubt Russia’s ongoing efforts to affect public opinion and politicians in Europe. FE’s head of intelligence suggests Russia may have focused its operations on other, larger countries during the recent election. Influence campaigns typically exploit societal divides to incite conflict and polarization, spreading distorted information or disinformation through various online platforms and personal networks.
