Safety guards to patrol Copenhagen streets

For the first time, community ‘tryghedsvagter’ (safety guards) will patrol the streets of Copenhagen, starting Wednesday evening, as announced by the City of Copenhagen. This initiative is part of a trial program allowing municipal safety guards in the streets, initially in the downtown area, with a capability to shift locations as needed, for instance, during major events. Aarhus Municipality has also set aside funds to deploy safety guards. These guards, distinguished by a unique uniform, are not police officers but will closely cooperate with the police to document incidents and ensure public safety at all times. They will undergo mandatory training for their roles. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated these guards will help maintain public order, particularly amidst disturbances like loud, intoxicated behavior during parties. However, the Police Union criticized the initiative, suggesting investment in more police officers would be better for actual safety.
